🌾 Our Farm Hub Journey: 2024–Present

Building a Community Farm Hub has been a dream for Granville Community Kitchen for many years, and we still can't quite believe it's becoming a reality!

In 2024, we secured funding from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, which allowed us to build our initial farm team and officially begin the search for our dream site. We were incredibly fortunate to meet the Cherries, who share our values and our vision for a fair and equitable food system. Together, we're exploring a community-owned approach that builds new relationships between urban and rural communities, creates opportunities for people to thrive, and strengthens vital community infrastructure.

Since signing our partnership agreement in October 2025, the project has gradually moved from the planning phase into early implementation. Looking back over the past two years, we're deeply grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way—through advice, encouragement, pro bono expertise, and collaboration.

We hope this timeline offers a behind-the-scenes look at the journey so far and brings you along as the project continues to grow.

🥬 St. Luke's Church Farmer's Market is back!

We're excited to return to St. Luke's Church Farmer's Market! We've loved spending Saturday mornings chatting with local people about our Good Food Box and offering fresh, delicious fruit and vegetables sourced from UK farmers, alongside freshly harvested produce from our community garden.

Come and say hello 👋 We'd love to see you there! We'll be at the market on the first Saturday of every month, from 10am to 1pm.

🧑‍🌾 Granville Community Farm Hub at Groundswell

This year, our farm team attended Groundswell Festival as collaborators with Groundschool, the educational project run by our landowners, the Cherries. We had the opportunity to present the Granville Community Farm Hub, sharing who we are, why this project matters, and how it has been taking shape.

It was a real honour to share our journey with so many people working towards a more just and sustainable food system in different ways. Groundswell brought together people united by a shared vision for the future of food, and we were grateful to be part of those conversations.

✊ Speaking Up for Granville Rec at Brent Council

We spoke on behalf of Granville Rec at the first Brent Council meeting with the newly elected councillors. Around 20 local residents and supporters attended to show their support for protecting the recreation ground.

Leslie spoke for five minutes on behalf of South Kilburn residents and Granville Community Kitchen, highlighting the growing threat to local green and community spaces as a result of the regeneration programme.

The Council's response was that difficult choices have to be made and that the proposed 16 new homes are an important part of meeting housing needs. We stressed that, with around 2,500 new homes already being built across the area, potentially doubling or even tripling the local population. It is vital to protect the green spaces and community amenities that both existing and future residents will rely on.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign, both on the day and throughout this journey. We will continue to stand up for Granville Rec and keep fighting to protect this important community green space.

✏️ Co-design workshops with Sib

In March, we held two in-person co-design workshops with architect Sib Trigg, who has rich experience working with community groups. As the Farm Hub is a community-centred space, we want the people who will use it to help shape its development from the very beginning. These workshops were a great starting point for identifying who we should invite to take part in future site design discussions and what the proper way is.

The workshops began with a role-playing exercise, where the farm team and the steering group imagined in detail what a typical day at the farm might look like for different stakeholders. We explored which areas they might visit and what kinds of infrastructure and facilities they might need.

Through discussions facilitated by Sib, we began to identify the tensions and constraints that need to be considered when designing the site. The conversations also helped clarify the different phases of the farm’s development and which infrastructures will be essential in the early stages.

The workshops were incredibly valuable, helping us get on the same page, communicate ideas more clearly, and take the first steps towards visualising what the future of the farm could look like.

🍅 Meet up with the advisory group of the Farm Hub

In February 2025, we established an Advisory Group to support the development of the Farm Hub. The group brings together a range of experience and perspectives across food systems, community organising, activism, and urban research. In December, two new members joined the group, further strengthening the collective knowledge and support around the project.

• Helen Woodcock, Co-founder of the Kindling Trust and Kindling Farm.

• Will White, Senior Associate for Food and Farming at the Global Strategic Communications Council.

• Zahra Dalilah, Queer Black feminist activist and facilitator with extensive experience in collective culture building, group conflict management, and organisational development.

• Chiara Tornaghi, Critical human geographer and scholar-activist, and Associate Professor in Urban Food Sovereignty and Resilience.

• Tom Carman, Practitioner and systems thinker working at the intersection of community empowerment, land stewardship, and organisational development, supporting community-led organisations to develop business plans, financial models, and investment-ready proposals.

• Mark Walton, Freelance consultant, facilitator, and coach supporting the strategic development of organisations, networks, and projects; formerly co-founder and co-director of Shared Assets.

We had our first meeting with everyone together in January this year. A huge thank you to all of them for being so generous with their time and for sharing their valuable knowledge and experience. Their encouragement and belief in the project mean a lot to us.

🎨 A Great Week with Northeastern Students

We had 10 young people from Northeastern University come and work with us for a week in March. They painted the undercoat for the graffiti piece at Metroland, helped us start our Save the Rec Banner and helped with food aid and sorting out our storage space.

They were wonderful and we miss them!

What’s happening on the day:

📢 Updates and discussion about the future of the garden
🌱 Guided garden walk
🐞 Bug hunt and biodiversity exploration
🥬 Sharing of garden-grown vegetables
🪏 Hands-on gardening activities
✊ Banner making for the Save the Rec campaign

We also want to open up a wider conversation about the food ecosystem and the need for transformative change, by showing our other programmes, including:

Granville Community Farm Hub – an agroecological farm hub connecting the urban South Kilburn community with land in the countryside

🍵 The Herbal Medicine course

🗓️ Dates: Starts from Sunday, 17th May, every Sunday

28th June, 1-5pm

📍 Location: Granville Rec community garden, NW6 5AR (or Granville Road Play Area on Google Maps)

Come and join us as we explore the living green pharmacy that grows all around us - even while living in the city. This course will help us reconnect back to simple and accessible knowledge about how medicinal plants can support our health. We will experience and relearn how our intuitive senses can inform and guide us to better understand which plants can support us while navigating day to day ailments and how to incorporate 'food as medicine' into our daily lives to promote better health and prevent disease.

The course will use a combination of: evidence based research, basic physiology and anatomy, plant botany and chemistry, folklore and traditional knowledge. We will expand and integrate different ways of learning to feel confident and inspired to use safe home remedies for ourselves, our families, friends and communities.

Relearning the healing plants that would have been common knowlege in past generations through growing, foraging and making medicine is one key way to build back resilience, respect and an intimate sense of nature nourishment that these times we live in are calling for.

🧙‍♀️ Facilitation team

Aimée Georgiou Lormand will be guiding this course - she is a qualified Medicinal Herbalist, body worker, gardener and community food grower who is passionate about making holistic healthcare and local organic food accessible to all.

Elise Yarde who will be assisting the course is a community food grower, budding herbalist, facilitator and activist who deeply believes in the healing power of plants and community.

Come and begin your herbal journey by joining us on this 6 week plant adventure!

We had 10 young people from Northeastern University come and work with us for a week in March. They painted the undercoat for the graffiti piece at Metroland, helped us start our Save the Rec Banner and helped with food aid and sorting out our storage space.

They were wonderful and we miss them!

🗓️ Time: Saturday 18 April, 12–4 pm
📍 Place: Granville Rec community garden, NW6 5AR (or Granville Road Play Area on Google Maps).

Why are we coming together?

Brent Council plans to build Block D (14 homes, 4 storeys high) on our beloved Granville Rec.Granville Rec is home to our community garden and vegetable growing project. It is a place where people come together to grow food, learn new skills, support wellbeing, and build connections.
In response, the community has been campaigning to protect this space(see details with the QR code on the back). On this day, we come together to celebrate the garden and stand up for its future.

What’s happening on the day:

📢 Updates and discussion about the future of the garden
🌱 Guided garden walk
🐞 Bug hunt and biodiversity exploration
🥬 Sharing of garden-grown vegetables
🪏 Hands-on gardening activities
✊ Banner making for the Save the Rec campaign

We also want to open up a wider conversation about the food ecosystem and the need for transformative change, by showing our other programmes, including:

The Good Food Box – an affordable, radical organic veg box (with fruit, veg tasting and homemade veg cakes available)

Granville Community Farm Hub – an agroecological farm hub connecting the urban South Kilburn community with land in the countryside

🍵 The Herbal Medicine course

🗓️ Dates: Starts from Sunday, 17th May, every Sunday

BREAK
21st June, 1-5pm

🪏 Partnership agreement signed

GCK has been working hard to find and secure land for our future Farm Hub.

In October, GCK signed an agreement with the Cherries, a farming family in Hertfordshire, to continue to build our partnership and use 27 acres of their farm land. We will now be developing a legal contract for the farm site so that we can get building our dream Community Farm Hub!

Here is John Cherry signing the partnership agreement at Metroland Studios!

🎉 Certificate Handing – Congratulations to You All!

We were delighted to present six certificates at our recent community meal to learners who successfully completed their Level 1 Horticultural Course with us (with another six graduates sadly unable to attend the ceremony).

Over the year, we delivered 62 learning sessions covering a wide range of food-related themes, including food growing, food processing, cookery, and the politics of food. In total, 215 unique learners from South Kilburn and neighbouring London boroughs took part in our learning programmes.

We worked with two primary schools, one secondary school, and a local youth club, and ran four adult learning programmes, engaging people of different ages in growing and building food-related knowledge together.

💐 A big year for our Community Garden, Granville Rec

It’s been a cheerful, thriving, and colourful year at Granville Rec. With the dedication of our wonderful gardeners, Aimée and Alfie, alongside all our amazing volunteers, the garden has harvested over 200kg of organic vegetables this year. These have been shared through the Good Food Box and community meals.

A wide range of culturally relevant crops have been grown, including callaloo, heritage chilli peppers, Vietnamese coriander, and climbing gourds. Alongside food growing, many varieties of flowers have been planted, not only to beautify the space, but also to support pollinators and to be shared with garden visitors.

We also planted 30+ medicinal herbs around the Rec borders, with educational signs highlighting their key medicinal properties and traditional uses.

🍅 Veg Scheme Meet-Up

We were glad to take part in the Veg Scheme Meet-up organised by Better Food Trader, where growers and organisers came together to share reflections and exchange ideas on how to build and sustain veg schemes that benefit communities and strengthen local food systems.

🥒 Garden harvest!!

This season, the garden has been bursting with life — juicy tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, marrows, and colourful squashes. Thanks to the hard work of our wonderful gardeners and volunteers, the harvest has made its way to St Luke's Church Farmers Market and the Good Food Box, bringing fresh, community-grown produce to tables across the neighbourhood.

🚌 Granville Community Farm Trip

We organised our first community visit to the Granville Community Farm Hub, bringing together 30 residents and volunteers.

The day began at the local town hall, where community members shared their visions for the farm — imagining what could be grown, built, and celebrated together.

The group then enjoyed a walk to the fields and heartfelt conversations with landowners John and Joanna, discovering more about the farm’s history and local ecosystem. The visit sparked inspiring ideas for how the community can shape, connect with, and share this space. ✨

✊ Campaign- Save Granville Rec Community Garden

We’ve launched a campaign to protect the Granville Rec Community Garden from demolition. Brent Council plans to build Block D (14 houses, 4 floors high) on our beloved Granville Rec.

Granville Rec is more than just a garden: it’s a hub for vegetable growing, community connection, health, learning, and well-being.

On 22nd September, about 20 local residents gathered for a public meeting to share ideas and actions to safeguard this vital space.

NW6 residents, Londoners who love green spaces, champions of urban growing. Join us! 🌱

These photos show how participants have been putting their learning into practice by growing at home and in their own spaces
